Andorra is a country of and for sports lovers. From cycling to skiing in Andorra, and everything in between, there is always so much sport taking place in the principality. While a lot of it occurs on the country’s mountainous terrain, there is also sport in the stadium, specifically the Estadi Nacional – which translates to National Stadium, in Catalan. This is the main Andorra stadium, used primarily for football and for rugby.

The Estadi Nacional, which was opened in 2014, is the primary home of two main Andorra football teams, one being the Andorra men’s national football team. Nicknamed the Tricolors, because of the three colours of the Andorra flag, they have played there since the stadium’s opening and have welcomed some of the best national teams in the world over the years, during UEFA qualification campaigns. That includes the likes of England, France and Portugal. And yes, Cristiano Ronaldo has played and has scored at the Andorra stadium!

The other Andorra football team which uses the venue, and which plays there much more regularly, is Futbol Club Andorra, more commonly known as FC Andorra. Because of the small Andorra population, and the relative lack of domestic opposition, FC Andorra play in the Spanish footballing pyramid and the team actually reached Spanish football’s second division for the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons. As such, historic football clubs such as RCD Espanyol, Real Zaragoza, UD Las Palmas, Sporting de Gijón or Málaga CF have all travelled to this Andorra stadium and participated in what were some unforgettable matches for Andora football fans. As of the 2024/25 campaign, and following a relegation, FC Andorra play in Spanish football’s third tier, called the Primera Federación.

When it comes to rugby, the Andorran national team also use this stadium. However, unlike in football where all nations play each other frequently, it is rare for the Andorra rugby team to take on or host one of the bigger nations in this sport.

How big is the Andorra stadium?

You might be wondering how big is the Andorra stadium, the Estadi Nacional. Well, the main Andorra stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 3,300 spectators, spread across just three stands, so it’s certainly not a large stadium.

On occasion, it has been possible to temporarily expand the Andorra stadium’s capacity slightly, and the record attendance at this venue was 3,631, recorded during a FC Andorra vs Albacete Balompié game in 2022

Who is the owner of Andorra football club?

FC Andorra boast a fascinating story, as an Andorra football team which plays across the border in the Spanish leagues. The club’s history dates back to 1942, but FC Andorra’s greatest successes have come in recent times and that is thanks, in large part, to the involvement of former FC Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué as the team’s owner

Piqué acquired this Andorra football club in December 2018 through his investment company, Kosmos Holding. His involvement brought renewed attention and resources to the club, enabling it to professionalise its operations and aim for higher ambitions, which the club achieved by reaching Spain’s second tier.

Interestingly, Piqué’s vision for FC Andorra goes beyond just winning matches. He has explained that he wants the club to be a sustainable and well-run entity. In this vein, there have been talks about an Andorra stadium renovation or even the construction of a completely new Andorra stadium for FC Andorra to play in. However, the plans for any FC Andorra new stadium are still very much up in the air, with talks ongoing between the club and the relevant authorities to decide what the next steps should be.

How to get tickets?

For now, FC Andorra remain at the Estadi Nacional, as does the Andorra men’s national football team, while the Andorra women’s national team play there on occasion too. So, if you want to watch some Andorra football during your next holiday in Andorra, you’ll probably be visiting the Estadi Nacional

The good news is that the Estadi Nacional is located in a very central location, in the microstate’s capital of Andorra la Vella. It is right in the centre of the capital city, with the river of La Valira to the ground’s south and with the main street called Baixada del Molí on the north side. As such, you can walk to this ground from almost any part of the capital city, which is ideal if that’s where your Andorra accommodation is.

As for acquiring Andorra stadium tickets, this will differ slightly depending on which team is playing, given that it’s the relevant club or federation which organises the sales of Andorra stadium tickets. In the case of FC Andorra, tickets can be purchased online via the club’s website, and they even have the option to browse the website in English. When it comes to the national teams, for both football and rugby, it’s more likely you’ll have to check the specific ticket release details depending on the game in question.

In any case, it’s rare for matches at the Andorra stadium to be sell-outs, meaning you can usually acquire a ticket even on the day of a game. Of course, it’s better to try to buy your Andorra stadium tickets as early as possible, if you’ve decided there is a game you’d like to see. And you never know, you might end up witnessing a famous moment in Andorra’s sporting history!
